Natural and cultured pearl jewellery

The Pearl Collection: Pure Lustre Born from the Depths

Formed naturally within the living shells of diverse mollusc species, pearls have been cherished for centuries as symbols of quiet, organic grace. Arriving at our bench in their purest form, possessing a natural lustre that requires no polishing or faceting, they represent gemmology in its most untouched state. From the elusive blush of a pink conch pearl and the fiery orange of a Melo pearl to the fluid, sculptural beauty of baroque shapes, each piece offers an individual narrative.

The mid twentieth century marked a truly transformative chapter in gemmological history. By the 1960s, the art of cultivation allowed high quality pearls to grace the wider world, turning what was once a privilege reserved exclusively for royalty into an accessible, beloved adornment, without diminishing an ounce of their refined beauty and timeless allure.

Gemstone Origin & Technical Properties

CaCO₃

Aragonite nacre · Conchiolin

Natural Composition

The chemical composition of the secreted nacre is identical in both natural and cultured pearls. Biogenic aggregate consisting of an outer nacreous layer of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃, predominantly aragonite platelets) bound by an organic protein matrix (conchiolin) and trace bound water (forming over a natural core or a cultivated nucleus). While virtually indistinguishable on the surface, the true difference between these oceanic treasures lies within their internal core structure:

Natural Pearl Core: 100% solid nacre built organically around a natural origin point (e.g. microscopic tissue anomaly).

Cultured Pearl Core: A cultivated shell bead or tissue nucleus at the centre, encapsulated by naturally deposited nacre.

Daily Wear & Atelier Care

With a gentle Mohs hardness rating of 2.5 to 3, pearls require thoughtful care to protect against surface scratching and contact with fragrances, hairsprays, or natural skin oils. We invite you to adopt the golden rule of dressing: “last on, first off”. A gentle wipe with a soft, damp cloth after every wear safeguards the delicate conchiolin matrix, ensuring your piece retains its captivating natural lustre for generations.

The Organic Palette: Forms, Colours & Overtones

Natural Pearls

Unassisted by human intervention, the colour of a natural pearl is profoundly influenced by the host mollusc, the purity of the secreted nacre, and the marine environment in which it grew. A pearl’s overall hue is a delicate interplay of a foundational body colour, most commonly white, pink, cream, yellow, or black, and a shimmering overtone, typically reflecting subtle nuances of rose, green, blue, or silver. While the classic round silhouette remains the most universally prized and accepted form, the unguided nature of organic growth lends each rare gem its own singular character.

Cultured Pearls

Nurtured through gentle human partnership, the colour and lustre of a cultured pearl are guided by the host mollusc species, the depth of nacre deposition, and its aquatic environment. Their radiant appearance encompasses a broad spectrum of body colours, from pristine white and soft cream to blush pink, opulent gold, and deep charcoal, elevated by overtones of rose, silver, green, or peacock. Within this family, freshwater varieties are celebrated for their bright lustre and delicate, smaller scale silhouettes, such as neat rounds, ovals, and buttons, making them exceptionally ideal for classic pearl bead necklaces. Guided by thoughtful cultivation, cultured pearls achieve a refined harmony of symmetry and natural grace, yielding timeless spheres, elegant drops, and expressively organic baroque forms.
